Real Estate Exposition and Forum… Huge Success

By John Glaab

Nearly 8,000 attended the three day EXPO Bienes Raices. People came to see over 150 exhibits and to attend professional and educational sessions. EXPO is Latin America's largest real estate event. The event was held in Late September at the World Trade Center in Mexico, D.F. Among those registered were real estate representatives and business leaders from across Mexico, the United States and Europe.

The State of Florida sent one of the largest delegations and a City of Miami Pavilion featured promoters of various types of properties. Maritza Porkolab, Director of Economic Development for Miami also participated in one of the education and professional sessions. Professor Howard Hunt, Research Economist from the Real Estate Center of Texas A & M University and Tina Kubicek Professional Development Director of the Texas Association of Realtors were among those attending a session on international transactions.

There were 540 registered for the Professional Program. One panel, "Connecting with Real Estate Professionals in the United States" was moderated by Jeffrey Hornberger, International Market Development Manager for the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) One of the panelists Maritza Porkolab, Director of Economic Development for the City of Miami outlined the requirements for Mexicans wishing to purchase property and invest in that city. Linda Neil of Mexico's The Settlement Company® provided suggestions for real estate agents in Mexico as to the expectations of foreign buyers. Linda told the audience that buyers from other countries expected the same level of service as received at home and wanted open and transparent transactions. She also stressed the importance of membership in NAR and AMPI, The Association of Mexican Real Estate Professionals.

Another interesting panel addressed the subject, "The Investment of Public and Private Funds." This panel was composed of members from Reichman International, the Canadian firm which has developed Mexico's tallest commercial building, a representative of the international bank HSBC and a Director from the group working on the restoration of Mexico City's Historic Center.

Urban Development was the subject of a panel which included members from Mexican government organizations and a journalist from the newspaper, The Economist.

Santiago Heroes de Tejada from the international business development company, GRUPO PLANNER came from Madrid to attend this event. He said, "The EXPO met all of my objectives for coming to Mexico."

Representatives of the real estate industry, government and business as well as the academic world were on stage for the inauguration of the EXPO trade show. Among those watching the ribbon being cut were Presidents of the Mexican Real Estate Association (AMPI) from the local and national level, Association of Mexican Developers, the Industrial and Commercial Institute, the Association of Tourism Development, the College of Architects and the Mexican Banking Association and a Past President of AMPI.

Commenting on the success of the event, Carolina Vidal, Director of TRADEX the organizing company said, "The Mission of EXPO Bienes Raices is to support and cultivate the growth of knowledge and professionalism in the Mexican Real estate Industry." She also reported the economic level of those attending the three day event was up 26 % compared to 2003.

This was the third year EXPO has held in Mexico.
