CommunityAnfibios International Surfing Tournament 2004
With waves from three to four feet tall, the competition began December 3rd at 8am and ended December 5th at 3:30pm. The last day of the competition the waves were more or less a foot and a half taller, which allowed the competitors to give a better demonstration of what they could do on the waves. 50 competitors participated in two categories, with some great surf notables coming out to compete. Ranked second nationally, Raul Medina Morelos, of the Mexican National Surfing Team, is the winner of numerous national tournaments, and was also the highest ranking Mexican surfer in the world after his showing at the past World Championships held in Ecuador. No less famous, was Roberto Salinas from Oaxaca, a winner of multiple national tournaments. Heriberto Ramirez Estrada, winner of the competition and winner of numerous national tournaments, who is getting good results internationally as well. Jose Manuel Trujillo, placing in second in the tournament and who at only 17 years of age is already a world class surfer and was a double champion at the past tournament held in Acapulco, Gro. last month. In the Body Board category notables included, Jose Rutherford, who has also obtained best in class results outside Mexico in international competitions. All of these surfers are professional, international competitors who are very strong in competition. The pretty Abril Blith of Acapulco was awarded Princess of the Playa in the Surfing beauty competition Miss Surfing 2004, not just a beauty she is also a talented surfer. In addition to the surfing competition, there were also a variety of beach game competitions open to the public, with winners being awarded prizes and a spectacular motocross exhibition put on by Fernando Sotelo, state Motocross Champion. Public Participation was very good with up to 500 people on the beach the final day. $35,000 pesos was awarded in cash prizes to the winning surfers and $5,000 pesos in prizes were given to the public. Next years event, Anfibios Surf International 2005, is expected to be much bigger, with a 1 star classification, giving away $100,000 pesos in cash prizes to winning surfers and $15,000 pesos in prizes to the public.
