ShoppingMercado Artesanias / Artisan Market
On Cinco de Mayo, just across from the church in Zihuatanejo and on Ixtapa Boulevard just across from Bay View Grand in Ixtapa, you will find open air market places, chock full of Mexican handicrafts. From souvenirs to fine crafted silver and hand painted lacquer ware, these open air stalls are bursting with color and bargains. Many of the vendors come from other parts of Mexico and the wares are regional and national Mexican products. Take the time to talk to the artisans and find out the history of the pieces, most speak English and are happy to strike up a conversation. Beyond the silver jewelry and the souvenirs some of the most eye catching are the hand painted lacquer ware. Brightly painted plates and ceramics in bold Mexican colors are functional, fun and festive. From whimsical fruits and vegetables to finely detailed country scenes, these hand painted objects are a regional craft of the state of Guerrero, and can be the result of many hours of work. Interchangeably called, the Artisan Market, the Crafts Market or the Tourist Market, most any taxi will know how to get you there, stroll through these colorful stalls and see what catches your eye.
