Z SCENE

DECEMBER 2004

By Judy Brown

MAGIC IN MICHOACAN
The magical colonial village of Patzcuaro was Z Scene of the nuptials of KAT MOORE from Houston, Tx. and PAUL COOPER from Wales. The wedding ceremony and dinner party took place at the beautiful La Mansion De Los Sueños owned by PRISCILLA MADSEN who did a fabulous job preparing this special event. Gospel singer, PATRICIA ARBUCKLE from Houston sang a soulful rendition of "At Last", and family and friends from all corners of the globe were cheering and tearing as Kat's father, JAMES MOORE, walked the glowing and more-than-misty-eyed bride into the colorfully decorated courtyard. Kat's mother KATY was radiant in red and beaming while son MATTHEW MOORE performed the ceremony which contained sacraments from seven different religions. A reading from Kahil Gibran was performed by the bride's sister MADISON AGEE, and MICHELE SIMPSON from Australia read from Pablo Neruda and ANNA MENDEM from London recited an original poem (both women used to work at Hacienda Eden). Sister of the bride ANNA KATE MOORE read an essay on marriage by JIMMY BLACKFEATHER ROSE of Patzcuaro. After the vows were exchanged the bride and groom and all the guests took the traditional walk around the charming town square before returning to Mansion De Los Sueños for dinner and dancing. MICHOCAN MADNESS: An after-party at Jimmy Blackfeather's home, La Mariposa, went on til the wee hours of the morning. Congrats and vaya con Dios, Kat and Paul.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN Z
Isn't it wonderful to know that in this modern cyberworld, the ancient ceremony of life and death continues? TANIA SCALES opened her exclusive Galeria Maya, featuring the sensational sculptures by ARTURO MACIAS, with a formal altar honoring Dia de los Muertos. The following day NOEL and his Aztec dance troupe Kalpulli Kuauhcihuatl paid a tribute ritual and ceremonial dance for the dead. LotZ of locals and out-of-towners were fortunate to share in the experience. We are grateful to Tania and Noel for bringing this gift to us. MORE DEADLY NEWS: The Hotel Villa Del Sol and Galart, owned by ROCIO MADRAZO, celebrated "Day of the Dead" with an extravagant "ofrenda" to the King of Rock n' Roll, ELVIS AARON PRESLEY. The exhibition included one-of-a-kind folk art pieces by JOSE A. MADRAZO of "Cielito Lindo" in San de Miguel Allende. Among the guests were GINGER CARAWAY, BEVERLY and CAMERON GESY of Troncones, MARY RUSHING of Abriendo Puertas and Project Zihua, PATY MONTUFAR of Paty's Mar y Mar Restaurant, and WIBKE LANGHORST of the ecology group SOS Bahia. PILAR MADRAZO and ANGELINA GALVEZ, sister and mother of the host artist were all smiles as were the other attending guests of the hotel.

NEWZZZ & SCHMOOZZZE
Artist JULIAN SCHNABEL snuck into town from New York to playcation for a couple of days. We heard he was out in Troncones and was also spotted holding court at La Perla Restaurant on Playa La Ropa. Galart and Hotel Villa Del Sol presented a jewelry exhibit of exotic designs by SANDRA JACKSON. As in the myth "Ketchikan" this Alaskan designer gathers stones from far and wide and gives them new life in each original creation. ROCIO MADRAZO of Galart put on a ZZZensational presentation. And a big welcome to MARGARET WELLONS of Berkeley, Cal. who is in Z to check up on her sister, Commander Extraordinaire JUDITH WHITEHEAD of Paradise Properties.

SOME LIKE IT COOL
And cool it was! The opening of Z's first and foremost blues club, the BLUE MAMOU, was a smashing success. Co-owned by blues legend JIMI MAMOU and wife JUDY, JEFF and LINDA HUTCHER, JUNIOR MORROW, and STEVE EHRMAN ("best bass on the planet") formerly of the John Lee Hooker band. Managed by Z Publishing Maven CATHERINE KRANTZ, creatively designed and built by Z Local Contractor BETO RAMIREZ, this venue promises to be ZZZ place to ZZZ and be Scene! Among those on hand were RICK from Rick's Bar, JOE and PATSY LOGIUDICE owners of ZZZ-LICICOUS Restaurant Coconuts (DAWN, owner of Lulu Jones Cosmetics is the new bartender there), JOHN MURPHY and CAROL JUK of Zihrena Systems, Z Attorney "jefe" DAVID CONNELL and MAURA, DEWEY and JILL MCMILLAN, CAPTAIN TONY PIAZZA of the Vitava. Among Z Original Women attending were ISABEL (with her A.J.), MARGO, TANIA, GRACE and LETI. Many more of Z Usual Suspects were there including LINDA FOX (great new do), MIKE B. and LOGAN.

PARTY ON
ANN MERRITT KELLOGG and hubby CHRIS outdid themselves this year. Their party was more fab than ever! Music man AIKEKE played for half the evening and the wonderful trio from Hotel Villa Del Sol played the night away. The Troncones contingency was rockin' and included EVA ROBBINS of Hacienda Eden, GAYLE and BOB SIEBENBERG (he's the drummer for SuperTramp), LINDA and HUEY RODEHEAVER, BARB LINDLAN, ANITA LAPOINTE, MIKE of Inn at Manzanillo Bay, HANS BROUWERS, and KAROLYN McCALL. Representing Z were Z Fave Rave Couple LOIS and DAVID BROWN. Making it a family affair was Chris' parents JUDY and FRED MONGOLUZZI from N.Y., Ann's mom MARIAN HATFIELD from Phoenix, and ANN's son JASON MERRITT who is opening stores in Troncones and Z called Mex-a-Grin. To complete the evening FATHER GEORGE and FATHER GENE from St. Louis, Mo. helped peel the shrimp…they were simply divine!

A shout out to Z Best Friends JAY and SANDY MESSINGER…hurry home!!
