| Upcoming Events - 2 Tag & Release Tournaments in November |
The first tournament, being held on November 17, 18, and 19 is the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag and Release Tournament. Ixtapa Sportfishing Charters (www.ixtapasportfishing.com/tournament/) teamed with Cabelas and AeroMexico as two of the major sponsors, and has two divisions. The offshore division is tag and release for billfish, with additional awards going to the largest tuna and dorado. The second division is an inshore fly fishing event. Both divisions are qualifying events for their respective year end Rolex/IGFA championships. The captain’s meeting, with registration available, is on the 16th.
The second tournament is the oldest of the two and in its 5th year. Originally designed as a tournament to bring the awareness of tag and release to the captains here in Ixtapa /Zihuatanejo, it has maintained its format where most of the prizes have always gone to the captains of the placing teams. This is unique in itself, because the teams that fish are the ones who pay for the tournament, but do not benefit in the majority of the donated prizes. Six years ago, founder Paul Phillips, understood the world class fishery we had here, but killing billfish was the norm. To bring awareness that tag and release can work, and help educate the captains to conservation and preserving their future, he developed the Fintastic Offshore Total Tag and Release Tournament. There are also awards for the largest tuna and dorado. This year, the Rolex/ IGFA qualifying tournament will be held on November 20, 21, and 22.
