March 2004
Tatteredbook.com and the author of Every Dog Has Its Day, Robert Covey, are trying to help raise funds to support the Library in Troncones, Guerrero, Mexico (Biblioteca de Troncones). The library was donated by Barbara Lindlan in honor of her late husband, Harry Lindlan, who died in 1998 while they were building their home in Troncones, and has been a wonderful addition to the community.
Robert Covey first heard about the biblioteca project through the message board www.zihuatanejo.net with a posting by Anita Lapointe, Troncones business owner and library supporter who said, “ We have a great library attached to our little primary school in Troncones, thanks to a donation by Barbara Lindlan… Our local kids are enthusiastic participants and the library is constantly being used. This is a delight to all of us in our little community. Donations of books, money or other supplies are always much appreciated.”
Covey began e-mailing Lapointe, for some input as to the Library’s needs and an idea of a poetry contest was struck upon as a fund raiser. He got in touch with Barbara Lindlan who filled him in on the background and past successes of the library:
The library is my project and since it was built on the school grounds, it has overlapped into a joint project of both school and library. ......every penny or donation received goes directly into the needs of the project. Because of the library, Troncones has been approved to have a secondary school which is in the initial stages of development. A new building is going up, but right now the students are housed in a meeting room used by the town for official business. Currently, students who wish to continue school after completing 6th grade are bussed to a larger and more sophisticated school in Pantla. We are working on upgrading our school so that our students can remain in town to continue their education. The biblioteca assists seven students for continuing education. This has been a very satisfying agreement with parents of the students and me whereby they assist me at the biblioteca and the funds I receive assist them to provide education for their children.. a win win situation. I had hoped to have computers up and running with access to the internet. I’ve installed a phone line and had seven computers ready to go, but this has been put on hold. The computer program requires more supervision and I don’t have the funds to pay someone to oversee their use. The library has been in constant use since opening. The teachers use it everyday for instructional purposes, English classes are held 2 days a week for Troncones residents, enrichment classes are held and video programs are scheduled. It has become a civic center for the children. We’ve even had baseball clinics and clown performances. This gives you some idea of the many uses. Currently, it runs about $5000 dollars a year to pay expenses of cleaning, gardening, maintenance, repairs etc. That is bare bones and little is left over for additions. Right now, most donations come in the form of school supplies and books. Please help me out if you can as my personal funds are limited . Thanks so much for your interest and support.
