January 2004

Happy New Year - Welcome to Another Day in Paradise!

Get ready for Sailfest 2004 Jan 29 -Feb 1, cruisers, landlubbers, landyachts, hobie cats and virtual cruisers welcome. The finale, 50 -100 sail boats flying their colors in procesion around Zihua Bay and on to Ixtapa is a sight to see from land or water, hope I'm on the water... (hint hint).

And for the early birds, witnessing the "shotgun start" of 100 + fishing boats barreling away from the pier the 1st morning of the fishing tournament, Jan 30, should be invigorating! (Somebody please take pictures so I can stay in bed )

Don't forget to vote in our Best of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Poll (it's on the web site). AND It's less than 4 months till the first annual Zihuatanejo Guitar festival, we need volunteers (

New Year's Resolution 2004: Get out more (and wear bold jewelry) - this month's editor photo was taken (by Grace Relfe) not in front of a computer but at Arthur Koby's Jewelry exhibition at Villa del Sol the day after Christmas, so far so good...

Spas in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo
by Lois Keeth-Brown

My sister Stephanie Goldman was visiting me in Zihuatanejo recently and I decided it would be interesting for us to research this article on Spas together. Stephanie being well versed in massage, she owns a Finnish sauna and goes off the beaten path for a Mediterranean bath or Hammam, was willing and able. I on the other hand have been on the receiving end of many massages and in my travels have come across some interesting techniques and of course the glorious baths, spas, Hammams of Europe and Morocco. I went to all of the spas in the Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa area to make appointments for the house specialties and unique body offerings. I was amazed by the variety, different settings and all out professionalism...

January Fish Report
For the last few years, January has been the "best of the best" as far as comparing our year round fishing months.

We not only seem to have it all in January, but the game fish species are all in outstanding numbers. In the blue water, we have the incredibly beautiful and great tasting Dorado, and huge Blue and Black Marlin. We also have yellowfin tuna, from the school sized fish of 30 to 50 pounds, on up to the Volkswagen size of 300 pounds plus. Inshore, there are roosterfish of 30 to 80 pounds, lots of jack cravelle, sierras, and rainbow runners. The sailfish is the most predominant species, and we get anglers from all over the world to battle with these acrobatic exotic game fish.

Birds of La Ropa
The first couple of days you only noticed the skimpy bikinis and the bronzed hard bodies walking on the sand..or you spent those first few days wondering how some other people are allowed to wear a bathing suit at all, showing the world what they really look like. How much torture can one person take!. So now you're sitting on the beach on La Ropa shielding your eyes from the sun when you glance up into the sky and you finally notice the birds.

Surfing Guerrero
The state of Guerrero is home to a plethora of surf, the variety of different types of surf the area has to offer is beyond compare in Mexico! Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is located right in the middle of your surf choices. One can venture both north and south from the center and find all types of surf...

Banks, Trusts & Trust Fees
Over the years I have been contacted by many foreigners who are frustrated with the fees they have to pay to the bank acting as their trustee. Unfortunately, upon reviewing their trust agreements (escrituras) I have to inform them that when their trust was set up they agreed to pay the fees the bank charges and also authorized the bank to be able to unilaterally modify these fees...
