JOY TO THE WORLD
What a joy to be back in our beautiful tropical paradise. On my return from La-La Land (that would be L.A. for those of you who aren’t familiar with this column) I felt exhilarated as I drove the roads of Z where almost every face looked familiar and friendly. “THE TOWN HAS CHANGED”: My heart winced as I passed the corner where Peter the Painter created his beloved paintings of surf and sand while holding court in Z-Town Gallery. While shopping in the market a local Mexican woman came up to me and said, “ Judy, did you hear, did you hear?” “What?” I said. “The town has changed, the town has changed” ! I thought a moment and asked, “Peter?” “Yes,” she answered. “The town has changed”. And so it has. Peter loved it when I called him “Bad Boy” in this column. He made me promise to never stop being irreverent of him. Peter the Painter was the best “Bad Boy” I’ve ever known.
SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW
I felt like Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” the day that the “tropical depression” hit town. Leaves and branches filled the air and the wind sounded like the Philharmonic. There I was with Z-Pup, “Toto” (aka “Bob Marley”), expecting to see a cow fly by the window at any moment ! ”Enigmatic” JEREMY PAZ, whose parents were the gurus of the beat generation and is in Z to write a book about his life, showed up on my doorstep after a tree crashed through his roof. We made our way down the hill to La Cantina at the Hotel Villa Del Sol where kitchen manager Eric and waiter Omar were seeing to it that everyone was comfortable and well fed. The next day it seemed like everyone was outside cleaning up and helping one another. “All the king’s horses and all the king’s men helped put”…you know the rest.
RESTAURANT RAMBLINGS
RICARDO RODRIGUEZ owner/chef of the beautiful KauKan Restaurant returned to Z after spending the summer in Spain and France. Ricardo was so inspired that he has now opened for lunch. One is likely to see Hemingway-esque BILL UNDERWOOD enjoying the sumptuous “tapas” at the beautiful new tapas bar and enjoying Z-fab view of the bay. TRIPPING THE NIGHT FANTASTIC: At the re-opening of COCONUTS were a bevy of international guests as well as the inimitable local color. Among those listening to the captivating sounds of Latin Jazz sung by MICHELE from Quebec and Caribbean recording artist AIKEKE were Gracious GRACE, Lovely LETI, TOM from Seattle, Surfing Champ and all around Lithe Spirit ANA ISABEL, LILY and Famous Tattoo Artist RAOUL from South Padre Island, JOHN and CAROL of Zihrena Systems and Carol’s sister JUDY. Talented jewelry designer ELENA SOLOW from New York, Z-Always Amazing MARGO and LUCY and BAINY stopped by for drinks after dining at Esthela’s Cocina Oriental. Among those in the inside bar cheering the Angels on to victory were Z-Beauty ISABEL and Main Squeeze AJ, LOGAN, and LINDA with the Laughing Eyes. We welcomed new managers of the Hotel Villa Del Sol, JONATHON and NICOLE WISE who added to the good vibes and fun of the evening. Back in town and Celebrating the Day of the Dead at Coconuts were the Texas contingency led by RICK and Sassy CISSY and MARSHALL, owner of the popular Basil’s restaurant in Austin. LOIS BROWN in all her Sparkle-Plenty glory and hubby Dashing DAVID, WILL of Casa Bahia, JACKIE and Publishing Maven CATHERINE.
FYI: Congratulations to EVA and JIM, owners of Hacienda Eden in Troncones, on their new expansion which includes a boutique and spa. They had a lovely champagne opening party which was a great success. Also congrats to KIMBERLY on the opening of her new salon & spa “Lavender and Roses” in Ixtapa. And Finnish artist KIRSTI of Mexico City and Z has opened “Obos”, a Bistro Deli, and will be serving Pastrami sandwiches among other Z-licious Z-lites!
HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD
Movie Icon ROBERT EVANS, who produced the Godfather movies and ruled Hollywood for awhile as President of Paramount Pictures, married LESLIE ANN WOODWARD at the Hotel Villa Del Sol. Evans is also the writer, producer and subject of the current and well received documentary and autobiography “The Kid Stays In The Picture”. Attending the celebration was actress REBECCA GAYEHEART, columnist PETER BART, and son of Evans and ALI MCGRAW, actor JOSH EVANS, Hollywood mogul BOB SHAPIRO, Actor MATTHEW McCONAUGHY, and former Beverly Hills High School mate and celebrity NIKKI HASKELL. DICK CLARK and wife were “scene” at Orlando’s bar as was POSIE and BILL ANDERSEN of Tiburon. The fireworks over the bay were spectacular and an enchanting time was had by all.
BIRTHDAY BASH
A fine time at the bash Adorable DAWN, owner of the newly opened “Lulu Jones Cosmetics”, threw for hubby VICTOR, with a large gathering of family, friends and familiar faces. From DAVID CONNELL’S office, FABULOUS FABIOLA, attorneys ANA LILLY and DANIEL and accountant OSCAR. BETO and wife LIZ, KIMBERLY & GONZALO, MARCOS of Bandidos and brother JOSE Capt of La Bamba, HUBERT & MARIA, PEDRO of Arbolitos and wife SUZANNA who has the new Brazilian bikini shop in town, dined under the stars in the candle lit garden.
BIBBIDI, BOBBIDI
And then there was the night that Z-Best friends, JAY and SANDY MESSENGER showed up at “Casa Brown” with a platter of sushi from Paul’s Restaurant, along with DAVID and LOIS, GRACE, ANTONIO OCHOA, Z-Brother MARK, Galart’s ROCIO, Captain TONY, ISABEL and MARGO carrying two gorgeous cakes, Ms. Extraordinaire JUDITH WHITEHEAD, Proprietess of Paradise Properties, brought a Mariachi band with her and Scintillating CINDEE and Darling DAN LEO came in from New York just in time to celebrate my birthday surprise. It was a magical night!
