November Fishing Report
By Ed Kunze

November is the true start of our fishing “high” season. The water temperatures start to cool down a little from the summer 85º highs to a more tolerant 78º. This brings in the migrations of billfish, yellowfin tuna and the cooler water inshore species like sierra and jacks.

This month is popular enough to host a couple of very respectable tournaments. The Fintastic Fish Offshore Total Tag and Release Billfish Tournament was the first ever in the Republic of Mexico, and one of the very first in the world, to develop a total tag and release format. This annual event is taking place on November 7,8, and 9, with its headquarters at Rick’s Bar. The Fintastic tournament is a qualifying event to the prestigious Rolex/IGFA Tournament of Champions.

The second tournament is the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Billfish Tournament, taking place on November 11, 12, and 13. This tournament is actually two, because both the Inshore and Offshore divisions are qualifying events to the Rolex. One note of interest is the Inshore division is the first ever “fly fishing only” tournament for our area.

How good is the fishing during these tournaments? Last year, in the Fintastic event, it was not uncommon to see 5 or 6 sailfish per day being tagged and released by each boat. In fact, Captain Calli on the Vamonos II had one day with the participating team tagging 10 sailfish. However, you do not need to be a tournament angler to get out and experience the same kind of fishing. For our future, it is best when you do follow the tag and release format.

Enjoy your day on the water.
