Volume 4 - Issue 22

November 2002

Welcome back to Another Day in Paradise!

This issue kicks off our fourth season in paradise and I couldn't be happier to be back again.  It's issue number 22 if you're counting -and I am!

We've made some changes and added some new features this season. A friend suggested a letter from the editor page and I thought how fun, a whole 'nother page of self indulgence, Yeah! I'll do it!

Then everyone always asks why we don't have a tidy little box that lists the staff and contact info and contributors like a real magazine. and well, why not?  So here it is.the list of our esteemed columnists and contributors, plus a want ad... gotta get some more names up there.-No, there's not much money in it but I'll give you an impressive sounding title: Senior Art Director, Head of Advertising Sales, Distribution and Circulation Coordinator.its either that or start making up names.

Starting in December we'll be introducing columns on Architecture & Dream Houses and Tropical Plants & Gardens, so if you know of an area property or garden you'd like to see featured, let us know. As well as a few more surprises lined up for next month!

This month we fondly remember local painter and legend Peter Schworer who we lost this year.  His painting of sailboats on La Ropa graces the cover to happily remind us of his colorful vibrant personality we miss so much.   Then we go to San Jeronimito for the annual regatta, Captain Ed highlights Captain Pepino in his ongoing Meet the Captains series, Professor Gregg talks about the history of the Catholic Church in Mexico, Ms. Brown covers the social scene in Z-Scene (I know you look there first! It's page 15 ), Wibke finds Fabrice at Bistro Taboga,  and since it's November Ms. Moore offers up some Day of the Dead background and a recipe for Pan de Muerto, SOS BAHIA celebrates their 3rd anniversary, and then I digress a little with our Beach Reading Book review series, this month about biographies and women.

So what are you waiting for? Turn the page!  Let's get this season started!

Catholicism's Rocky Road in Mexico
Most visitors to Mexico arrive with the idea that it´s a staunchly Catholic country.

Well, it is and it isn´t, and Mexican history explains why...

Meet the Captains - Captain Pepino
Zihuatanejo has so many world class fishing captains, it would be impossible to pick out just one and say, "he is the best there is". I kind of compare it to the old adage in the National Football League: "On any given Sunday, no one team is better than any other". That is so true with our fishing captains...

November Fishing Report
November is the true start of our fishing "high" season. The water temperatures start to cool down a little from the summer 85º highs to a more tolerant 78º. This brings in the migrations of billfish, yellowfin tuna and the cooler water inshore species like sierra and jacks.

French Twist - Chef Fabrice finds a new home
Superb.

There was no better description for the deliciously moist and flaky piece of pepper- and herb crusted mahi-mahi that I had just tasted. A welcome departure from the usual red snapper "al mojo de ajo" that - although generally quite tasty - eventually loses its appeal for the local diner because of its sheer omnipresence on the town's menus...

Día de Muertos
Día de Muertos, Day of the Dead, November 2, is more traditionally known as Todos Santos y Los Fieles Difuntos in Mexico. It is a holiday unique to this country and celebrates the departed souls within families...

S.O.S. Bahía celebrates the Day of the Dead
"Adios, Señora Muerte, y buenas noches!"

The little girl stretching out her hand to "Lady Death" was very serious. After all, this was the Day of the Dead, and the woman in front of her, in her dress hung with bones and fishing line, the wide-brimmed hat with the big flowers made of tortilla chip bags and plastic shopping bags and the bright orange sash across her chest that advertised "Caution - construction zone" on one side and "Señorita Bahía" on the other, looked suspiciously like the "Catrina," the laughing skeleton representing death, a central figure in the Mexican "Day of the Dead" tradition...

Z-Scene - November 2002
JOY TO THE WORLD

What a joy to be back in our beautiful tropical paradise. On my return from La-La Land (that would be L.A. for those of you who aren't familiar with this column) I felt exhilarated as I drove the roads of Z where almost every face looked familiar and friendly...

XVI Annual San Jeronimito River Regatta
The recent rains had the San Jeronimito River moving swiftly just in time for the XVI Annual San Jeronimito River Regatta held Saturday October 12th...
