| Roberto Martínez and Eric Reid, Live at Daniel's |
by Catherine Krantz
March 2003
Sometimes it is the joy of discovery that makes the trip worthwhile, journey down by the basketball courts in Centro Zihua and you’ll get a very rare treat. For the flavor of Latin music and a memorable experience that creates as many new fans as happen by, stroll down the Fisherman’s walk one evening and catch Roberto & Eric on the sidewalk in front of Daniel’s. A talented duo that obviously enjoys what they are doing, as much as the packed beach front restaurant’s patrons, who come every night to see them.
All smiles with an infectious and unassuming banter (and how could they not smile when everyone passing by feels compelled to dance) that makes for an accessible and intimate setting. Roberto Martinez is originally from Acapulco, Eric Reid from New York and they have been delighting Zihua audiences for 3 years now, in the Westin and Villa de Sol hotels, and at restaurants, bars and private parties around town, with occasional trips up to Troncones. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them yet, they are now at Daniel’s on Playa Principal in Centro Zihua, right next to the basketball courts every night 7:30-10:30 and well worth a listen.
If you are a lover of music you won’t be disappointed. You’ll find Brazilian, Latin Jazz, Cuban, and Flamenco exquisitely executed by Eric on nylon string guitar and Roberto on electric bass. A minimalist set up with a big sound, they both trade off singing duties impressively. They recently recorded a live CD, right on the beach at Daniel’s, called “Live and Living South of the Border”, get your copy soon, they have a habit of selling out. They say they have been playing every night straight for two years now, for their obvious skill and comfort playing together I can believe it, but for their ease and cheeriness I think they’ve had a vacation in there somewhere. Maybe it’s just the view of the bay they play to every night or the enthusiasm of their devoted fans that keep them smiling. Stroll down the fisherman’s walk in Centro Zihuatanejo one evening, for the starry nights, the ocean breeze and some fabulous music. You never know, you just might burst into spontaneous salsa dancing on the sidewalk. You wouldn’t be the first.
