Meet the Captains - Captain Calixto (Cali) Juarez Abazan
Sacrificing his body, the goalkeeper made yet another incredible save. I thought to myself "there was no way he will get back up after that one". But, the league championship was on the line. Players from both sides were pushing themselves beyond their endurance levels, and still reaching deep to find more. As Cali slowly got up, blood appeared as a big blotch on his cheekbone, and his ankle had more of the vermilion stuff. Shaken and staggering, he managed to make a couple of more saves before the whistle blew and the championship was in the bag. |

Second Annual Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Tournament
The Second Annual Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Tournament was held from November 10th to November 13th, 2002. And newly included this year was a total release Inshore Division for fly fishing. The arrival of a strong series of storms in the week prior to the tournament dumped large amounts of rain on the area and made for some difficult fishing conditions.

January 2003 Fishing Report
From reviewing my last 5 years of logs, and talking to a lot of captains, I have been putting together some rather interesting data. February has always been the traditional month for the fleet's bread and butter sailfish, but the growing trend is leaning towards January. For some reason, it appears the water currents have been slowly changing and the annual influx of game fish have been getting here earlier this last 5 years. |

Lobster: Feast from the Sea
The mention of langosta, or lobster, immediately conjures up images of a mouth-watering delicacy served in a seaside restaurant. Visitors to Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa can find the local Pacific spiny lobster on the menu of many establishments, as well as in the fish stall of Zihua's Mercado Central. |

At the Movies - Frida-Light Now Available in Mexico |
The much awaited, much anticipated movie of the life of Frida Kahlo has made it to town. It has already been to two of the three theaters and is available in at least one video store and the rest should soon follow. The reviews locally have been very mixed, from glowing praise, to ambivalence to downright indignation. And as in all things, it is always easier to hate than to love and as tempting as it may be, I'll try not to take the easy way out. |
