Volume 4 - Issue 25

February 2003

Hello you!

Yes, you-holding this magazine-Here's to you!

Welcome to Another Day in Paradise's 25th edition.

This month finds us moving down the road.

Thanks for reading and don't stop now!

To that end we've made some improvements this month just to please you! We've increased the number of pages and the number of copies and have added a new city. We have articles highlighting Mexican History, Food, Sportfishing, our vibrant and active Community and the natural wonders we are so fortunate to have here. We go just up the coast to the village of Majahua to learn about geology and the La Majahua Cavern and then we just keep on going. This month we welcome Pátzcuaro, Michoacán to the Paradise family. Just a few hours up the road and we'll go there every month.

Look for Paradise on the square in Pátzcuaro and know we wouldn't be there (or here) if it weren't for you.

Happy February!

Catherine

The Streets of Zihuatanejo
This study is concerned with the origin of the downtown (el centro) and La Madera streets of Zihuatanejo. Long ago when the fishing village began, fishermen congregated along Playa Principal and a beaten path, the Paseo del Pescador, was the hamlet's first trail...

Mahi-Mahi or Dorado
Once only a by-catch in the tuna/swordfish long lining industry, dolphin fish-not to be confused with porpoises who are often called dolphins-were first introduced to the US market by way of Hawaii. The Hawaiian word for dolphin fish is mahi-mahi, which mean "strong-strong", and that is the term you will most commonly find on menus in the US...

Meet the Captains - Captain Orlando Hernandez Aguilera
It is 4:30 and several hours before the sun rises red over the Sierra Madres. As his wife wishes him good luck, Orlando quietly leaves his house near the airport and heads in the direction of Zihuatanejo...

Aikeke
Aikeke Rose, (I-key-kay), is a musician you are likely to spot around town performing at area bars & restaurants, over the past few years becoming a standard of the Zihua music scene. Born on the island of St. Vincent, music has always been a driving force in Aikeke's life and it has taken him across the globe...

Majahua Beach Cleanup - February 2003
Picture Mexico. What springs to mind? No doubt you have many abiding images of the country: wonderful people, fantastic food, fascinating culture, beautiful beaches? Mountains of trash? It's a nasty thought but probably in there somewhere...

Z-Scene - February 2003
THE GOOD LIFE:

Gourmet critic GARY IBSEN was in town staying in PATSY and JOE LOGIUDICE'S charming Studio Casa Luna. Gary who hails from Carmel, Ca. wrote the best selling "Great Tomato Book" and is known as "the tomato king"...

Sailfest 2003
by Lisa Martin

After over three months of planning by dozens of land and sea-based volunteers, the second annual Zihua SailFest 2003 raced into Bahia Zihua January 29 to February 1, raising over $11,500 for the local bilingual Netzahualcoyotl Indian School...

The Magic of Majahua
I have been asked to write a short article pertaining to the natural history and other points of note, in a region of subtropical woodland north east of the village of Majahua. I intend to pick and choose from the plethora of wonders available and write of just those things that have caught my interest...

Patzcuaro
by Kathe Kokolias

I am traveling on an Amtrak train on my way to visit my family in Upstate New York, looking out the window at the Hudson River. A heavy layer of clouds has transformed the sky, river and distant Catskill Mountains into a backdrop of gray gloom. Rain pelts the window and I turn my attention away from the river to the book that has kept me company since I left Mexico...
