December 2002

Letter from the Editor

Dear Santa,

We’ve been very very good this year.

We’ve always managed to get the magazine out in the same month it was supposed to be out in, with just the barest minimum of mistakes. We’ve taken nice pictures and written great articles…

We’ve learned about Mexican history and culture; this month we have the story of La Malinche, translator to Cortes and lasting historical symbol.

We start a series on Frida Kahlo, another brave Mexicana who left a legacy. And we have the history of the Virgin of Guadalupe day, an important holiday with beautiful processions.

We’ve eaten good food, and written to tell about it, this month recipes of Frida’s Christmas Eve menu and a trip to El Marlin to meet Don Pedro.

We’ve gone fishing and have had fishing tournaments, this month with Capt. Poli and the wrap up of the Fintastic Total Tag & Release tournament.

We’ve gone back to school, The Neztahualcoyotl Bilingual Primary School, to learn about the Náhautl language.

And still found time to throw big parties and Z-Scene was there. We’ve even managed to find some Upcoming Events and Live Music to talk about.

We’ve been very busy here in paradise and think we deserve good stuff! (I have a long list of wishes so I’m going to send them in separately), but as for Another Day in Paradise we just wish everyone Health, Wealth, Happiness and a fabulous New Year!

Thanks,
Catherine

History - La Malinche
The first words spoken by Aztec emperor Montezuma to Spanish conquistador Hernándo Cortés were translated by a young Mexican woman, an intimate aid to the Spanish captain, whose language skills and political savvy helped de-throne Montezuma and topple Aztec civilization as much as did Spanish steel and gunpowder.

Frida Kahlo - A Legend of Courage
Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico's most well known and well loved artists, this month we are starting a series to highlight her extraordinary, vibrant life and the continued fascination it inspires, here in Mexico and throughout the world.

The Taste of Mexico - FRIDA'S CHRISTMAS EVE DINNER
Frida Kahlo loved Mexican traditions and seasonal dishes. She would engage the whole family for shopping at Mexico City´s downtown markets for her well known feasts, be it posadas, Dia de Muertos, Independence Day or Easter. She enjoyed planning menus and cooking for large parties where she and her beloved Diego would share their outrageous political and artistic opinions with their intellectual friends.

The Incredible Culinary Adventures of Don Pedro Serrano
Pedro Serrano is a small man with a big passion: he loves to feed everything that moves.

Meet the Captains - Captain Hipolito (Poli) Hernandez
I remember on more than one occasion, when I was out on the water fishing with clients and listening to the radio chatter, about how I have been absolutely astounded when I would hear Captain Poli come across the radio reporting his latest catch...

Finastic's 2002 Total Tag & Release Billfish Tournament
Three in a row for Capt. Jose Luis "Pepino" Servin and Whisky II. This year with Dr. Ken Ellis and Roland Ramirez. Pepino has now sent three different teams to the Rolex/IGFA Invitational Tournament of Champions.

Dia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Lady of Guadalupe Day
December 12th is traditionally known in Mexico as the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) celebrating the manifestation of the Virgin Mary appearing to the Aztec Native Juan Diego on Dec 9, 1531...

Z-Scene - December 2002
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE
Lots of wonderful Thanksgiving happenings: LOIS and DAVID had a quiet dinner at their "fabienda" with their boys BEEGE and NICKOLAS, TONY and CLAIRE PIAZZA and daughter, ERICA. JUDITH WHITEHEAD of Paradise Properties had a gathering at her lovely home in Ixtapa...

Nahuatl: Language of the Aztecs
Many visitors to Mexico do not know that not all Mexicans speak Spanish. Over 60 different tribal languages are still actively spoken today among Mexico's indigenous, or "Indian" peoples.
