I’d like to share with you part of a letter I sent to my Zihuatanejo neighbor, Mona, after the terrorist attack of Sept. 11 on the United States. Mona had just returned from Z to her home in New York when the tragedy struck . She wrote to me about her feelings of devastation and heartbreak and asked me to please send her a letter describing the way it felt to be in Z. This was my reply:

“How can I explain how wonderful it is to be here and yet let you know that what has happened in the U.S. feels like no less of a tragedy to me. I truly believe that Zihuatanejo is one of the last safe havens on the planet. Tonight Cindee and Dan Leo, Judith Whitehead, Margo Chipman, Tony and Claire Piazza and Ricardo from KauKan came over and we watched the President’s speech on CNN. In fact, I have not been able to take my eyes off CNN. Ricardo brought delicious food from KauKan and we told stories, and discussed, debated and nurtured each other well into the night. My heart aches for the people in the states and for the entire human family. I feel so incredibly fortunate to be here. I feel safe and am content. My heart is heavy yet I love this beautiful place and the friends I have made here. I believe that the people who find themselves here, whatever their story, are of like mind and a kind of inner life and spirituality that is unique to places like this. We talked about it tonight...Zihuatanejo gets into your bones.. And I thank G-d for that.”

Welcome Back, Your Dreams Are Your Ticket In:

MIDNIGHT MADNESS:

Ms. MONA FELTS gave a Z-oiree for neighbors at her beautiful La Ropa condominium which was designed by local designer/decorator NICOLE. Tripping the Night Fantastic were the sensational CINDEE and DAN LEO of New York and Florida, the fun-loving and fun and loving MARTA and SEBASTIAN SOLER of Mexico City who were celebrating their 40th (count ‘em) FORTIETH wedding anniversary, FREDO KILLING from Colorado Springs and son, JUSTIN (he’s got my vote for “most interesting eleven year old ever”), Attorney Robert Crollet from Taos who brought friends from Albequerque, N.M., and my pal, BOB DOYLE of Los Angeles, fresh from working with TOM and PENELOPE CRUISE/CRUZ and director CAMERON CROWE (Almost Famous) on the soon-to-be released movie, VANILLA SKY. G-d attended in Her full glory sending brilliant bolts of lightning and raucous rounds of thunder along with torrents of rain pouring down from the skies. My poor pup, BOB MARLEY, was found hiding under the sofa but soon joined the rest of us in celebrating another magical night in Z.

SLOWDOWN FOR THE LOWDOWN:

Had an oh-so-sensual manicure and pedicure at the beauty salon “Lavender and Roses” in the Villa Del Sol at the same time chatting with owner and “hairdresser to the stars” KIMBERLY, and listening to the soothing sounds of WILLIAM ACKERMAN...Enter New York supermodel MICHELLE FERRARO and friend JONATHON both raving about the aromatherapy massage they had just experienced at the salon as did actress TORI SPELLING earlier in the week.

FYI: Scene dining at the Villa del Sol were PATSY and JOE LOGIUDICE owners of the fab and famous Restaurant Coconuts, with film and TV writer NICK VILLIERS author of “Blood and Wine” and wife MASHA, NYPD Blue Emmy award winning writer ANN BIDERMAN and screenwriter (7 Years in Tibet) BECKY JOHNSON . Restaurant COCONUTS will be opening for the season in late October, followed shortly by it’s yearly Halloween /Day of the Dead official opening. Do yourself a favor and be there. It promises to be a blast!

Also RICK of RICK’S BAR is getting ready for their Grand Opening/Halloween costume party, Oct 31, to inaugurate the new second floor Crowe’s Nest Bar, pre-season party last weekend was reported to be a huge success.

SHRIMP BOATS ARE A COMIN’:

Former chef at Casa Que Canta and current chef/owner of the sensational KauKan Restaurant RICARDO RODRIGUEZ took the LEOS, JUDITH WHITEHEAD proprietress of PARADISE PROPERTIES, BILL UNDERWOOD of Long Beach, Ca. and yours truly for a private tour of his newly completed shrimp farm in the lagoon at Playa Larga. Quite impressive indeed! Go Ricardo!

HEADTURNER: Have you seen the new screen at KauKan by local artist GABRIEL VITTA? Z-lightful!

LOVE THIS: MS WHITEHEAD had several Z-Women for dinner at her wonderful new condominium in Ixtapa. And what a night it was! ISABEL, MARGO, LETI, GRACE and STELLA were in attendance and it turned into an honest-to-goodness gal-pal blast-from-the-past. The food was fab complete with ISABEL’S sinful homemade chocolate cake. Plenty of laughs were had by all as well as a generous supply of Tequila and one hysterical DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW.

WOMEN AND MEN of Z UNITE:

Speaking of Z-Women, how good was it to get back to our weekly Pozole on Thursdays at El Profe in Coacuyal? Soooooooo good! This has become a ritual and a “must go” ...how ‘bout it Z-guys? Also spotted at El Profe were DR.ROGELIO GRAYEB with wife SAIDA and their children as well as our very own editor and chief CATHERINE KRANTZ, with FABIOLA and ANA LILIA of attorney DAVID CONNELL’S office, JJ’s “jefe” HANS was also there with a large group, sampling the famous lunch time mezcal....

FAMILY AFFAIR:

MARGO left for New York and Florida to meet up with her ”hijas” TURQUESA in New York, CHELAN in South Hampton and MALI and LULU in Florida. LULU will be returning to Z with MARGO. Hurry back safely gals...we miss you. And this reporter’s brother MARK BROWNSTEIN and wife, actress TROAS HAYES will be visiting Z from Encino, Ca.for the first time in November...can’t wait!

SOMETHING SPECIAL GOING ON: Regulars and out-of-towners are starting to return to Z for Another Day in Paradise. We look forward to welcoming them one and all.
