New Area Codes will affect all calls coming into Mexico, Local Calls will be unaffected since we’ve already changed to including 554, 553.... with the exception of cell numbers which will require the additional “55” prefix...
COFETEL, the Mexican Telecommunications Regulator, has determined to change Mexico’s Numbering Plan from 8 to 10 digits on November 17, 2001.
All Area Codes in Mexico will be modify to:
* Two digit Area Codes for Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey
Three digit Area Codes for the rest of the Country
All International Inbound calls to Mexico will change due to New Area Codes.
* Numbering Plan will take effect, November 17th, 2001 at 0200 CST (08:00 GMT)
* Permissive dialing period for international calls with Telmex: ?From November 17th, 2001 to February 16th, 2002.
* When placing a call you will receive a messages (Spanish/English) requesting that the called party provides the New Area Code.
* Starting February 17th 2002, a dialed 8 digit telephone number will not be allowed.
Calling from the States to Mexico:
Before November 17th, 2001:
* International Prefix (011)+ 52 5080-2000 (Embassy Mexico City)
* International Prefix (011)+ 52 7 553-2100 (Ixtapa Consulate Office)
After November 17th, 2001:
* International Prefix (011)+ 52 55 5080-2000 (Embassy Mexico City)
* International Prefix (011)+ 52 755 553 2100 (Ixtapa Consulate Office)
Some examples of the new area codes:
* Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua new area code : 656. Ex: 01 + 656 000-0000.
* Guadalajara, Jalisco, new area code: 33.
* Hermosillo, Sonora, new area code: 662
* Matamoros, Tamaulipas, new area code: 868.
* Merida, Yucatan, new area code: 999.
* Mexico D.F., new area code: 55.
* Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, new area code: 81.
* Nogales, Sonora, new area code: 631.
* Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, new area code: 867.
* Tijuana, Baja California Norte, new area code: 666.
* Acapulco, Guerrero, new area code: 744.
* Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, new area code: 624.
* Cancun, Quintana Roo, new area code: 998.
* Cozumel, Quintana Roo, new area code: 987.
* Ixtapa Zihutanejo, Guerrero, new area code: 755.
* Mazatlan, Sinaloa, new area code: 669.
* Oaxaca, Oaxaca, new area code: 951.
* Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, new area code: 322.
* San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi, new area code: 444.
* San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, new area code: 415.
Dialing a Cellular Telephone, after November 17, 2001 you will need to dial the new area code even if calling locally.
For Ixtapa dial: - Example: 044 755 557 1106. For dialing a cell phone from the United States:-Example: 011 + 755 557 1106
