Mexico's Fighting IRISH
For the United States Army they were more hated than the vilest enemy soldier - traitors, deserters, defectors. They are best forgotten.
For Mexicans they were - and are - gratefully remembered as heroes, patriots and martyrs; men who followed their conscience and sacrificed their lives defending Mexican honor and sovereignty. They will never be forgotten. |

Zane Grey (wuz here)
Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American fiction writer, a self-titled writer of historical romances, romantic in the sense of sweeping adventure tales. Of his penchant for romance, Grey stated, "To my mind, romance is only another name for idealism; . . . the spirit, not the letter, of life." |

Meet the Captains - Capt. German Lara Magaña
A great new boat has just been added to our fishing fleet here, and it is owned and operated by one of our best captains. German (pronounced er-man), the son of a local fisherman, grew up fishing in Zihuatanejo and has known no other life. |

The 3 masted schooner had been waiting for daylight. She was 190 feet long. Built for one specific purpose, she could safely sail on any sea known to man. As the black rock became visible, the Fisherman glid into Zihuatanejo Bay. |

The Taste of Mexico - Coffee, anyone?
The coffee shrub originated in Abyssinia and the Sudan. It is a large, evergreen bush with dark, shiny leaves. The cherry-like fruit is soaked, de-pulped and dried. The seed is then polished to remove the parchment-like husk and outer filament. |

A Coffee Lover's Journey to Bliss
I had the best latte of my life last week: freshly brewed organic coffee topped with a tall hat of foam produced by warm milk that came straight from the cow. Make that organic milk from an organic cow, because everything that is produced and consumed up here in the "Corral del Diablo", a coffee finca high up in the sierra above Zihuatanejo, is organic. |

Secret Spots - La Gaviota - Troncones
It is hard to escape eating good seafood while here on vacation, or even living here. There are a variety of dishes that most places prepare, and one of my favorites is the pulpo a la diabla (octopus in the sauce of the devil). Lots of places make this dish, but few do it right, and none make the dish as succulent and as perfect as the beach restaurant, La Gaviota in Troncones.

PARTY TIME
Sparkle and Shine: Not only does she sparkle on the outside but she shines from within. That would be the "luscious LOIS BROWN!" She and hubby Dashing DAVID gave a party in honor of LOIS' brother MARK from Enumclaw, Wa. (you heard me right), and friend CARLOS from Italy. The "fabienda" Villa Zanzibar was filled with locals and out-of-towners, young and young-at-heart. |
