ONE ENCHANTED EVENING
The auction at Rick’s Bar to help WILL of Casa Bahia was a huge success. Z-Publishing Maven CATHERINE KRANTZ put it together with blues pianist CHRISTINA BRIDGES from Nashville serving as auctioneer and singer/guitarist JOSEFINA assisting. RICK was so generous as to donate the place as well as partial proceeds from the drinks and food sales. Others from the community donated everything from hats and paintings, to fishing trips and romantic get-aways. The bidding went on until midnight and everyone was happy with the results. We are a small community and it feels good to know that when the chips are down we come together to help one another. That’s not to say that we don’t have our feuds. Sometimes it’s that way with families. We should be proud of ourselves to know that we can unite when it is important to do so.
AS GOOD AS IT GETS
Z-Best Friends SANDRA and JAY MESSINGER (son of the late MAXINE MESSINGER of the Houston Chronicle) were in town from Boulder, Colorado “playcationing” with friends CINDY and BRIAN ATLAS from Houston, and former Boulder police chief TOM KOBY and wife TERESA. They were gifted “A Day of Fishing with DAN LEO” from the auction and they had a blast. DAN was gracious-as-always and the fishing was just as generous. The following day they were lucky enough to have “A Day In Troncones with Kaptivating KAT” where they surfed, snorkeled, lunched at Eden and went sightseeing all under the creative guidance of our dear KAT who always makes everything fun and interesting. Later on in the week Z-Always- Amazing MARGO and her “hija” Lovable LULU took the group for a hike over the mountain to the private and pristine Manzanillo Beach. KAT and I grabbed a panga and joined them for lunch. According to BRIAN, “It just doesn’t get any better than this!”
BIRTHDAY BASH
MARSHALL who owns the popular Basil’s Restaurant in Austin, TX., celebrated his birthday at El Guero in Playa Larga with loads of friends attending. Feasting on the great birthday fare cooked up by MARCOS’ wife NANCY and enjoying the sunset festivities were DEWEY from Troncones, Gracious GRACE and “hijo” Handsome WINTER, YOGI from Missouri (aka “The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi”), PETER and KIM from Canada, RODNEY and JACKIE, ROBIN from Ixtapa, LENNY and LIZ, FRED, JANET, and LAWRENCE from San Miguel de Allende, Austin restaurateurs KATHY and MICHAEL, and soon-to-be-married DANCING DON and BETTY . Also celebrating his birthday on Las Gatas was Birthday Boy OWEN LEE, owner of Las Gatas Beach Club, with a mellow group of locals and out of towners. Dear friend NADINE came in from Cuernevaca and everyone enjoyed the “talla” of delicious Dorado and beautiful rum birthday cake. A glorious time was had by all.
PEOPLE WHO LOVE PEOPLE
Quite an eclectic group at the party that Captain ANDREW and Charismatic KATE of THE NIRVANA fame and JEREMY PAZ gave at JEREMY’S house in La Ropa. A kind of “Northern Exposure”, Z-style! This mixture of people is one of the reasons that makes living in Z so special. There was Scintillating CINDEE LEO looking stunning-as-can-be with hubby DAN, and Luscious LOIS BROWN in another eye popping “Sparkle Plenty” number with hubby Dashing DAVID intently talking with Daring Dancers TONY and CLAIRE PIAZZA, and Ms. Extraordinaire JUDITH WHITEHEAD of Paradise Properties mingling with Sassy CISSY and RICK from Austin, LEONORA, JJ THE ORIGINAL from the JJ and Sanka Grill; Surfing Champ ANA ISABEL with “novio” HUW of Jaguar Tours, TOMAS with the pink beard, and MARCOS the resident DJ at the ultra-hip Zen Bar in Ixtapa was with ADELA the resident yoga teacher at Hotel Villa Del Sol.. ABBY and her very bright and adorable “hijo” PATRICK were all smiles while CATHERINE and KAT were chatting up Denver “DJ- DAN-E” who came in to spin the tunes and was with TIA the Tatoo Artist; LEIF from Mazatlan, GERT from Belgium, JOSE from Pepe Sound and FARAR also showed up and the partying went on until the wee hours of the morning. Now is that an eclectic group, or what? The dance floor was on wheels!
HAIR TODAY…
Had a terrific haircut by KIMBERLY (formerly of Umberto’s in Beverly Hills) owner of the beauty salon Lavender and Roses at Hotel Villa Del Sol. Also having his hair cut was FRANK CARACI, director of “The Wedding Singer” and “The Waterboy” both starring ADAM SANDLER. PATSY LOGIUDICE owner of Coconuts came in to pick up friend JEAN NATHAN who was having a massage at the salon. Ms. NATHAN writes for Travel and Leisure Magazine and was staying at JOE and PATSY’s charming Casa Loma. FYI: Later that night “scene” sipping at the delicious and popular Coconuts was BUDDHA MAN and wife JAN, LINDA FOX, CAP from Portland, JOHN and CAROL of Zihrena Systems, EDIE FROM TAHITI, LOGAN, and Creative Jeweler “Jungle Boy” JUAN CARLOS and beautiful “Jungle Boy” Taming Wife, the Savvy SILHOUETTE.
RESTAURANT RAMBLINGS
New Restaurant il Mare (on the road to La Ropa) is booming. Owner FERNANDO is cooking up tasty dishes and he and wife BILIM are delightful hosts. Moonlight Magic: JUDITH hosted a dinner party at the charming Al Cilantro Restaurant in Ixtapa where owners GABY and GUILLERMO served gourmet cuisine under the stars. GABY is now giving cooking classes and sharing her fabulous recipes at the restaurant in the charming bed and breakfast “Tres Puertos” which is also their home.
