A Library for Harry
by K.L. Moore

There once lived a man who loved to read, passionately. His name was Harry Lindlan. He was from Mound, Minnesota, USA. He was a decorated Marine who served in WWII and whom everyone referred to as a man of his word. He moved to Hunnington Beach, California where he struck up a friendship with a woman named Barbara. The two of them played racketball avidly and dined out afterwards. Barbara started to beat Harry. Harry asked Barbara out for a date. The two fell in love and then started a life together. They traveled the world, raised seven children and even golfed in Norway, of all places to golf. Even in his late 60’s, he was climbing the fijords, playing 18 holes. Twenty years passed and the couple came to Mexico looking for an area to retire and build a new life. They chose Troncones, Mexico. The two of them started to build their dream house on the beach and began immersing themselves in their new culture and surroundings. The couple were never happier. Challenged together with the task of bulding a house, learning new things everyday, their relationship grew stronger and more connected than ever. Harry so wanted to give something back to the community he was coming to love. But, unfortunately, he never had the chance, as he died of a heart attack. One would think that Barbara would pack up and go home to be with her children, but she stayed. She stayed because she wanted to fulfill her and Harry’s dream, a house on the beach and a life of peace and tranquility. As the weeks passed into months, Barbara began to realize that Harry’s love of reading and knowledge needed to be a carried on in some way, a way of seeing his passion turn into a reality. So, she is building a library for the village of Troncones. In honor of Harry Lindlan, the library will be in the center of Troncones where all people, locals and tourists alike, will have the chance to learn something new, read a book, watch an informative video or volunteer their services.

When I first met Barbara, I knew she was a fantastic person, but after coming to know her in a much better light I now see her as a person of infinite porportions and energies. Her passion and love for Harry shines through her eyes as she talks of the library. She is about to fulfill her dream as the library is nearing its final days of construction. Teachers from the Troncones school are going to use the library with its over-head projector, learning videos and computers, to facilitate in teaching their classes. Classes in English will also be offered to the school children, as well as classes in Spanish for those homeowners and business owners needing to learn Spanish.

Soon, Troncones will have the Harry Lindlan Memorial Library open for its use. The construction is just about complete. Barbara Lindlan welcomes any donations to the library, or any volunteers willing to work a few hours a day, or maybe even more. She has many books that have already been donated or purchased. She needs any research books written in Spanish and English. She also needs donations of school supplies, any cd-rom learning programs for the computer or learning videos. She would love to have a few more used laptops or VCR’s. So, if you are planning a trip to this area, try and bring something to her. Even if it is just a box of crayons, your thoughts and donations will be welcomed. All inquiries can be made to her at: bellovista50@hotmail.com or you may call her at her home in Troncones, 553-2814 locally or 011-52-755-553-2814 from the Sates and Canada. Remember, it is for Harry. A Library for Harry
