December Fish Report
December, the first of the really good series of winter months for fishing. November set the stage, but it is in December that things really start coming together. Unlike Cabo San Lucas, and most of the rest of the world class fishing destinations, Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo is primarily a winter fishery. Even though we have excellent year round fishing, the blue marlin and giant tuna are nothing but world class in the winter time. In addition, with our “ among the top two best in the world fishing locations for sailfish”, and all only within a few minutes of the docks, you have everything you could ask for in an offshore fishery.
The big blue marlin and the yellowfin tuna move in when the water has cooled down to their preferred 78º temperature. Combine that with an abundance of bait fish, and they will stick around till mid June. Our average size for the blue marlin is right at 250 pounds, with the giant yellowfin going 200 pounds and more.
For the inshore fishery, it is also the time of the Chulas (a 3 to 6 pound white meated tuna, and tastes better than albacore), the Sierras (Spanish mackerel), jurel (jack cravalle), barriletes (black skipjack) and the occasional dorado or rainbow runner. We still have some good roosterfish action also, and knowledgeable captains like Adolpho on the Dos Hermanos and Martìn on the Isamar can put you on to these hard fighting exotics.
Please remember, no matter how good the fishing is, the resources are limited. For sailfish, tell your captain you practice catch and release. If the captain does not have a tag stick or tags, contact me and they will be provided for (at no charge) before you leave on your charter. If you catch a sailfish with a tag already in it and before tagging the fish again, cut the tag off and have the captain return it to either me or Captain Alfredo Vargas on the Whisky I for a 50 peso reward to the crew. (This year round reimbursement program is sponsored by Paul Phillips, founder of the IGFA approved Fintastic Fish Tag and Release Tournament held here each November).
