| Meet the Captains - Margarito |
Captain Margarito Romero is probably one of our area’s youngest Captains with his own boat, and chartering out on a regular basis. Sport fishing in Mexico is an industry that rarely sees a man, who has scrimped and saved for several years, able to purchase a cruiser style boat until he has reached his mid 30’s.
Captain Margarito is an exception to that rule. He started out at a very young age and through hard work, and a lot of help from a friend in Mexico City, was able to purchase the “Gaby” when it came on the market. His skills for finding and catching fish, combined with a fantastic personality and a great sense of humor made for a regular following of repeat clients and a great reputation.
He just turned 28 in July, but has now owned the 28 foot “Gaby” for 6 years. The “Gaby” is an ideal boat for up to 4 clients to have a memorable day on the water. And, memorable it can be. Captain Margarito specializes in catching the bread and butter fish of the Zihuatanejo fleet and holds our unofficial record of releasing 24 sailfish in one day. He only stopped fishing that day because they had run out of bait.
One may ask why one captain seems to have more “luck” than another. With Captain Margarito, you will observe a very good intellect and an incredible athletic ability. He is an outstanding soccer player and once even had a tryout for the Mexican professional league. His intelligence and athletic ability keeps him alert at all times. Margarito seems to notice and observe everything. He may be having a conversation with you, and in the next instant is setting a hook on a sailfish. It happens so fast, that if you just glance away for a second, when you look back, he is handing you the rod with a fish on.
His youth and exuberance also has something to do with it. He loves to fish and will give you a full day on the water. But, he also loves his soccer. When the boat is cleaned and ready for tomorrow’s clients, he is off to play a full game of soccer with his team in a local league.
Margarito fishes several days a week and knows where the fish are. He is highly respected by all the other captains in the fleet and, during the course of the day he is on the radio a lot to give others his location and results. They in turn reciprocate, making for great teamwork and better fishing for everybody.
The “Gaby” rents for $300.00 / day. Captain Margarito can be reached on his cellular phone at 044-755-747-68.
