| National Surf Team still in need of Sponsorship |
by John Murphy
The new Amateur Mexican National Surf Team is in need of sponsors to help with the expense of sending the team to Durban, South Africa May 24th - June 2nd 2002 for the International Surfing Associations World Surfing Games. For most of these young participants the amount required for the trip is more than they and their parents will make in a year. Travel expenses are high, about $3500 US per competitor, and additional equipment will be necessary. Most of these surfers do not own a wetsuit and have never experienced water as cold as a South African winter will bring. Champions have been told by the Mexican Surfing Association they must solicit their own sponsorship to get there. Originally the World Championships were set for October of this year but were moved up six months to May 24th through June 3rd. This meant the Mexican Surfing Association had to move up all their qualifying events to allow the surfers to advance through the necessary rounds and unfortunately, it also left Mexico’s New National Surfing Team with just a little over a month to solicit sponsors to help them get there. Also unfortunately, too little time apparently to go through the necessary channels to get the needed involvement of large Mexican corporations. Not a single Mexican corporation has been willing to help the Mexican National Surfing team get to South Africa.
Here’s some information about 5 talented team members who will be happy to accept help in the form of equipment, plane tickets or money for expenses.
