MTV Latin American Party - Ixtapa
by K.L. Moore

Forget Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Acapulco, or Rio de Janerio. This year MTV Latin America decided to film their annual spring break party at Playa Linda in Ixtapa. For one week the crew of MTV filmed three of their most popular shows in the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area, as well as hosting a three-day rave party on Playa Linda. Top Ten Video Countdown, Top 20 Videos of the Week, and the show ‘Dismissed’ were all filmed in our area. ‘Dismissed’ is a dating show and six segments were filmed. The segments featured participants jet-skiing, snorkeling, sailing on the famous Nirvana, dining and golfing. The last segment was filmed on Sunday afternoon, April 7th, and it featured a local Zihuatanejo girl, Nara. The video countdown shows were shot around both Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. One of the most impressive things about MTV being here was that all the producers of all the shows were women. As some of you may know, Zihuatanejo is known as the land of women and I thought that it was quite fitting that all the people in charge happened to be the ladies. All were impressed with Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, and this came from women who have been in some of the greatest places in Latin America. They all seemed to feel right at home and said that they were most impressed with the people who lived here, their open faces, wide grins and wonderful helpful personalities.

Luckily, I obtained a backstage pass to the main event. The rave was a three-day event and featured famous Mexican, Argentine and Venezuelan DJ’S culminating in the appearance of the headliners, “Deep Dish”. Originally from the Ukraine, Deep Dish claims Washington DC as a home base now. They are Grammy award-winning DJ’s and have worked with some of the biggest names in the music business, including Madonna. The duo was scheduled to end the event by taking the stage at 1:00 am on Sunday, April 7th. Prior to Deep Dish, the crowd was entertained with a sampling of some of the better DJ’s in Latin America. Backstage was an interesting scene. I had a great view of the two-thousand kids out in the crowd. They came in droves from all over Mexico. Playa Linda looked like a camping ground for the entire population of Ixtapa. Ravers come in all shapes and sizes, but youth seemed to be the general description. I could not believe that our little place had become the location for one of the biggest parties of the year. They all seemed to be waiting for the main talent to come out and ‘spin’. Waiting for ‘Deep Dish’. I really enjoyed chatting up all the MTV crew backstage, asking them all sorts of questions about their jobs and places they have been. I began talking to two guys dressed alike. Taking them for camera-men or production assistants, I asked about their music favorites and work and general stuff. With very strange accents, they responded politely and finally asked me if I really worked for MTV. I replied, “No, I got a pass from a friend, I am just here for the party.” With a gleam in their eyes, they replied “You have no idea who we are, do you?” “No,” I said, “I thought you were just with MTV.” Laughing, they replied, “We are ‘Deep Dish”, and with that they walked on stage and spun their magic until 6:00 am.

All shows filmed in our area will begin airing on Latin America MTV on April 23rd. If you have the chance you should mark your calendars, just to see our hometown in the background.
