April 2002 Fish Report
By Ed Kunze

The annual green water current is moving out, with the 78º blue water coming back in to about the 8 mile mark. The first part of April has been a little slow for all species, but there has been a definite improvement.

Historically, April is considered to be a blue marlin and giant tuna month. That has been true this year also, but we have been having to make 45 to 60 mile runs to get them.

Most boats are getting about one to three sailfish per day and, with the International Sailfish Tournament being held the first week of May, the sailfish action will be improving.

The roosterfish action has been a hit and miss situation, however, when we have found them, it has been fantastic. We have been averaging 5 roosters a day and the fish have been going from 25 to 42 pounds. Trolling very slow along the surf line, with light line and a live bait, has been doing the trick.

Remember, a sailfish is too valuable to catch only once. Practice tag and release.
